Last Saturday I met up with a friend I hadn’t seen in over a year, because we’re both terrible at keeping in touch but thanks to Instagram we both know the other is alive and well enough to post pictures. We’re both in our thirties and want to have low key nights that end at 10pm, because staying out until the sun rises is for young people who don’t know how good sleep is. We met for dinner and went to a place I had saved in my Google Maps list “Want To Go”. I got the idea from another friend’s boyfriend to save places that I found randomly in newsletters and listicles, so that when I wanted to try a new place I already had a list to choose from.
Pure Thai Cookhouse is a tiny place in Hell’s Kitchen that was packed and smelled amazing. The tables are small and you’re sitting on a metal barstool with the slit in the middle and you have to hang your coat on the wall hooks because there’s no room. It’s totally worth it. My friend ordered the Pad Thai with Shrimp while I ordered the Jungle Curry Fried Rice with Chicken at medium spicy instead of full spicy. The staff was nice considering they had to maneuver through such a small space overflowing with customers eager to stuff their faces.
Because it was cold out and we were not trying to turn up, we ordered hot tea, green and jasmine that were delicious. The food, that was superb. I love fried rice. Love everything about it. I want it all the time and when it’s done right my inner self does cartwheels and backflips of joy. The rice was fresh and fully seasoned. Every bite was flavorful and the chicken was tender. It was everything I had imagined and needed nothing else (sometimes only by adding hot sauce does a dish become palatable). My friend’s Pad Thai smelled divine and the crushed peanuts added a satisfying crunch to the smooth rice noodles, while the shrimp was succulent 😉
I will order a noodle soup the next time I go because I imagine it’ll be good enough to lick the bowl in front of complete strangers!
