Recently I went on a two week trip to Barcelona and Paris with my mom and we had a scrumptious brunch in Paris at a place I’ve been following on Instagram for over a year. Holybelly 5 is located in the 10th arrondissement, a short walk from Canal St. Martin and they’re a breakfast and brunch spot.
The glass fronted vestibule has a merchandise display with their mugs, their signature Mother sauce, Canadian maple syrup and logo tees. The young woman who seated us, greeted us in French and when she heard my stammering response kindly spoke to us in English.
The space itself is so warm and inviting that I will return on consequent trips to this city that has claimed a piece of my soul. (I know it sounds silly to some, but Paris like New York is “my city” in an indescribable way.) Our server was amazing because she spoke both English and Spanish so my mom and I ended up communicating in Spanish with her. Holybelly was the first place outside of Starbucks that we found that had filtered drip coffee so my mom was ecstatic because she’s not a fan of espresso. It was served with warm milk which is something I wish was the norm in the US and Canada. I ordered a London Fog and both drinks were exquisite.
Because we’re both huge fans of sweet and savory, we ordered the “Savoury Stack” which comes with pancakes, a fried egg, bacon, a homemade bourbon butter and maple syrup. I also ordered hash browns and an order of the haloumi cheese because our server said both were house specialties. Everything we ate was well done, flavorful and so yummy I was sorely tempted to lick the plate. The hash brown had a great crispy exterior but was soft on the inside and the haloumi was golden on the outside and just right.
The service was the right combination of attentiveness and space so that we didn’t feel rushed or harassed, and genuinely warm. I ordered a second London Fog to go and wished we had more time to come back again. Holybelly 5 is a place I’ll return to every time I’m in Paris because it feels like an old friend who’s always waiting with open arms and bombass food.
